The Idea

Recently I made a dress with a corset-belt — deep purple heavy linen with small black accents, inspired by one of Schiaparelli’s modern-era designs (Adriana Lima wore it beautifully). Schiaparelli is known for surreal details like eye, ear, or nose buttons. I love that playfulness, but instead of copying it with cheap replicas, I wanted to create something new.

For me, versatility is key — being able to shift a piece from understated to bold. That’s what the dress does: a background for brooches and accessories, yet strong enough on its own. But the plain black buttons kept bothering me. Too simple on their own, not expressive enough. That’s when this project began.

Why Button Covers?

With the festive season approaching, many of us feel the pressure to buy new clothes for every occasion. But do we really need more garments — or endless accessories? I don’t think so.

Instead, imagine one shirt or dress that transforms with ease: calm and confident in the morning, refined and festive in the evening.

The solution? Detachable button covers. Clip them on when you want to make a statement, remove them when you don’t.

The Project

This tutorial will guide you in making button covers inspired by hydrangea blossoms — small, sculptural flowers that attach using a decorative button-cover base (not improvised, but the real findings made for this purpose).

You’ll learn how to:

  • Build lightweight hydrangea motifs that look refined yet wearable.

  • Mount them securely onto a button-cover base.

  • Adapt colours and textures to fit your style.

  • Use them as a simple tool to refresh existing outfits.
